LOD 2006 Landscapes of Desire 16th International Art Symposium Castle
Fertőrákos, Hungary, 14.-29.7.2006
Fertőrákos, Hungary www.fertorakos.hu The Hungarian municipality Fertőrákos near Sopron, since 2001 part of the World Cultural
Heritage, is located near the Austrian border, 70 km from Vienna. Fertőrákos has a very interesting historical past and an outstanding cultural
infrastructure, such as a roman quarry with a columned hall that locates a theatre with 740 seats, the Mithras-Sanctuary - a rock chapel established 2000 years ago
by roman border guards -, and a 700 year old castle, the former episcopal see. The inscription into the World Heritage List was decided as this area has been the
meeting place of different cultures for eight millennia. This is graphically demonstrated by its varied landscape, the result of an evolutionary symbiosis between
human activity and the physical environment. The remarkable rural architecture of the villages surrounding the lake and several 18th- and 19th-century palaces adds
to the area's considerable cultural interest. International travel:
